Woo Why We're Modernizing Payments and What It Means for Developers

WooCommerce is planning significant technical changes to make the checkout experience more consistent, intuitive and flexible. These innovations will offer several advantages for both merchants and developers.

For Sellers

  • Consistent Interface: A standard interface will be provided for configuring all payment solutions.
  • Easy Installation: The discovery and setup of payment methods will become simpler.
  • Improved Governance: A more intuitive management experience will be offered.
  • Advanced Presentation: A better display of available payment options will be provided.

For Developers

  • Fast and Reliable Interface: A faster and more reliable settings interface for your customers.
  • Increased Visibility: The discoverability of your payment gateway will be increased.
  • Standardized UI Patterns: Standard user interface patterns will be implemented to reduce support requests.
  • Future Ready Infrastructure: A solid foundation will be built for new features and capabilities.

These changes will be gradually introduced with a feature flag starting with version 9.6. This will allow you to test the new interface while keeping your existing integrations. As an important note, these updates will only affect the WooCommerce > Settings > Payments page; individual payment gateway setting pages will remain the same.
